Rogue trader warning after three arrests made

Two men and a boy were arrested for criminal damage, and a van was seized yesterday (Tuesday 14 October) following reports of rogue traders operating in Redditch.

Two men, aged 26 and 23, and a 17-year-old boy were arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage to a dwelling following reports of three people knocking doors in the Abbeydale area, offering to clean guttering for cash.

At two properties, residents reported rogue traders had climbed on to rooftops and then caused damage to tiles, before the trio asked them for hundreds of pounds to carry out repairs.

Officers from Redditch Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) swiftly dispatched to the location after it was reported to us and made three arrests.

All suspects have been bailed pending further enquiries, and an investigation is continuing with our partners at Trading Standards.

A van being used by them was found to have no MOT or tax and was seized by police.

We are advising residents not to open their doors to anyone cold calling offering repair work on their home. If in doubt, shut them out.

Police Sergeant Craig Osborne of Redditch SNT said: “Rogue traders and doorstep callers may do unnecessary work, or to a poor standard, or the price may rapidly increase.

“They may also use intimidating and aggressive behaviour to demand substantial amounts of cash for shoddy workmanship.

“In this incident we arrested two men and a boy who were offering to clear the guttering then asking for more cash to fix roof tiles which we believe they damaged. Their van was also seized for no tax or MOT.

“We are urging residents to be on their guard and would also ask them to be neighbourly and look out for people may be vulnerable in their communities if they feel they can help.”
